A widely used independent reference for crypto prices, market data and exchange rankings, including a trust-score methodology for evaluating venues.
Our assessment
CoinGecko provides the same core service as the market's largest price reference and is not owned by an exchange. In a sector where the most-read exchange ranking belongs to an exchange, independent ownership is the point rather than a detail.
Trust score, and why we use it
CoinGecko publishes a trust score for exchanges built from order-book depth, spreads, reported-versus-estimated volume and other observable inputs. It is imperfect and it is a published, reproducible methodology applied uniformly — which is why we use its ranking to select which exchanges enter our comparison rather than choosing them ourselves.
The limits of aggregated market data
Reported volume is self-reported by venues, supply figures depend on issuer disclosure, and a market capitalisation on a thin token is last price times a number somebody supplied. Aggregators mitigate this with estimation methods rather than solving it. Read any single figure for a small-cap asset as an approximation.
Free, with paid API tiers
The web product is free and the API has free and paid tiers. Fourteen of our indicators found nothing published at conventional addresses and ten more returned automated-verification blocks, producing a low documentation score for a product most of the industry uses daily.
Who it suits
CoinGecko fits anyone who wants prices and market data from a source with no exchange affiliation, and anyone comparing venues who wants a published methodology behind the ranking. For on-chain and protocol-level data, DefiLlama and Dune are the right tools.
Frequently asked
Does this score mean CoinGecko is trustworthy?
No. It measures what is published and reachable before use: the service, its terms and its documentation. Custody, routing and corporate structure are not tested by us.
Why do all providers score zero on corporate entity?
Because this class of service rarely publishes it. The indicator is identical for every provider in the category, so the comparison stays fair.
Are rates or spreads compared here?
No. Verifying quoted rates requires live transactions, which we do not perform. The rubric covers disclosure, not execution.
