The most widely used free DeFi dataset, tracking TVL, fees, revenue and yields across thousands of protocols with an open methodology and a free API.
Our assessment
DefiLlama is the reference dataset for DeFi: total value locked, fees, revenue, yields and volumes across thousands of protocols and every significant chain. It is free, the API is free, and the adapters computing each protocol's figures are open source.
Open methodology is why people trust it
Every other data provider asks you to accept its numbers. DefiLlama publishes the code that produces them, so when a TVL figure looks wrong you can read the adapter and see exactly what is being counted. Disagreements become specific and fixable rather than a matter of which vendor you believe.
Know what TVL does and does not mean
TVL is the market value of assets in a contract. It rises when prices rise without a single new deposit, double-counts assets deposited into one protocol and rehypothecated into another, and can be inflated by a protocol depositing its own token. It is a useful comparative measure and a poor absolute one — and this is exactly why we use it for selection rather than for scoring.
Free, and structurally important because of it
Because it costs nothing, DefiLlama is what almost everyone actually uses — which makes its methodology the industry's de facto standard. Our documentation check found fourteen indicators with nothing at conventional addresses and ten returning automated blocks; the score reflects that surface, not the data quality.
Who it suits
DefiLlama fits anyone comparing protocols, chains or yields, and it is the first tool to open for almost any DeFi question. Wallet-level attribution and market structure need different tools — Nansen, Arkham, Glassnode.
Frequently asked
Does this score mean DefiLlama is trustworthy?
No. It measures what is published and reachable before use: the service, its terms and its documentation. Custody, routing and corporate structure are not tested by us.
Why do all providers score zero on corporate entity?
Because this class of service rarely publishes it. The indicator is identical for every provider in the category, so the comparison stays fair.
Are rates or spreads compared here?
No. Verifying quoted rates requires live transactions, which we do not perform. The rubric covers disclosure, not execution.
