Coinbase's $7.74B XRP Balance Mystery and Canary's First U.S. Staked TRX ETF

A sudden $7.74 billion jump in Coinbase's XRP holdings turned out to be a tracking correction, not a sell-off — while Canary Capital prepares to launch the first U.S. staked TRON ETF this week.

America's crypto market delivered two notable developments on September 9, 2026: a startling balance shift at Coinbase that briefly rattled the XRP community, and a milestone product launch from Canary Capital that pushes TRON further into mainstream U.S. finance. Together, the two stories highlight how exchange transparency and ETF innovation continue to shape investor sentiment heading into the fall.

Coinbase's XRP Holdings Suddenly Jump by $7.74 Billion

On-chain trackers set off alarm bells this week after data from XRPScan showed Coinbase's cumulative XRP balance jumping by roughly 5.57 billion tokens, worth about $7.74 billion, in a matter of hours. The move was first flagged by the XRP Rich List Bot, an automated tool that monitors large shifts in XRP wallet balances, which recorded an increase of nearly 4,870% in Coinbase's tracked holdings.

The change instantly reshuffled the XRP Rich List. Coinbase's newly recognized balance of about 5.68 billion XRP — roughly 5.68% of total supply — pushed the exchange into third place among the largest known XRP holders, trailing only Ripple and the Korean exchange Upbit, and putting it well ahead of Binance's tracked balance.

A sudden inflow of that size would typically raise concerns about an incoming sell-off, since large transfers to exchanges often precede liquidation by big holders. However, XRPScan clarified that no new tokens actually moved onto the platform. Instead, the explorer had identified a batch of previously unlabeled Coinbase-linked wallets holding roughly 5.5 billion XRP that had gone unindexed until now. Once tagged correctly, the balance appeared to spike overnight, even though the underlying holdings had likely been there for some time.

Community members were quick to ask whether the newly identified tokens belong to Coinbase itself or represent customer deposits held on the platform. XRPScan indicated the balance most likely reflects client funds rather than proprietary corporate holdings, consistent with how large custodial exchanges typically structure their wallet infrastructure.

Canary Capital to Launch the First U.S. Staked TRX ETF

Separately, asset manager Canary Capital confirmed it will debut the first U.S. exchange-traded fund offering both direct TRX price exposure and staking rewards, trading under the ticker TRXS. Unlike a standard spot crypto ETF, the fund is designed to participate in TRON's proof-of-stake mechanism, meaning its net asset value will reflect staking income in addition to token price movement.

TRX currently ranks as the eighth-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, with a valuation near $32.1 billion according to CoinGecko. TRON founder Justin Sun framed the launch as validation of the network's growing footprint in global digital finance, citing the substantial volume of stablecoin and payment activity already running on the chain. Canary Capital CEO Steven McClurg echoed that view, noting that institutional investors are increasingly focused on the infrastructure layer powering digital-asset settlement rather than token price alone.

The TRX product extends Canary's existing crypto ETF lineup, which already includes funds tied to XRP, HBAR, and Litecoin — positioning the firm as one of the more active issuers bringing altcoin exposure to U.S. exchanges through regulated wrappers.

What These Developments Mean for the Market

Neither event moves fundamentals overnight, but both reinforce a broader theme playing out across the U.S. crypto industry this fall: growing scrutiny of on-chain data accuracy, and accelerating institutional access to altcoins through regulated products. The Coinbase episode is a reminder that raw blockchain analytics can mislead even seasoned observers when indexing gaps exist, while Canary's TRXS launch shows issuers are racing to package staking yield — not just spot exposure — into products retail and institutional investors can access through ordinary brokerage accounts.

For traders, the takeaway is straightforward: verify exchange-balance alerts against primary sources before reacting, and watch for more staked-asset ETFs to follow TRXS as competition among issuers heats up.
