Crypto markets opened the week on shaky footing, with Bitcoin sliding roughly 1.5% to trade near $78,500–$79,400, pulling back from its recent push above $80,000. At the same time, a very different kind of crypto story was capturing attention on social media: Hunter Biden's confirmation that he is launching his own memecoin, $LAPTOP, on Wednesday, September 9.

Bitcoin Retreats as Rate-Hike Bets Build

Bitcoin's latest slide traces back to Friday's blowout US jobs report, which showed nonfarm payrolls jumping by 162,000 in August — nearly triple what economists had expected — while unemployment held steady at 4.1%. Strong labor data initially sounds like good news, but for risk assets like Bitcoin it cut the other way: a resilient job market gives the Federal Reserve more room to keep interest rates elevated, which pushed Treasury yields and the dollar higher and dented appetite for speculative assets.

The knock-on effect has carried into this week. Bitcoin was last seen trading in the high $78,000s, down from an intraday high near $80,500, with analysts pointing to $78,000 as the key support level to watch. A break below that zone could open the door to a slide toward $77,000, while holding it would keep the broader uptrend intact. Short-term Bitcoin holders are still sitting on roughly $9 billion in unrealized profits, but leveraged long positions have added to the selling pressure.

Traders are now looking ahead to the August Consumer Price Index report, due September 11, as the next major catalyst before the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on September 15–16. A cooler-than-expected inflation print could ease rate-hike fears and give Bitcoin room to recover; a hotter one could deepen the pullback.

Hunter Biden Brings Politics Into the Memecoin Arena

While macro traders watch the Fed, a different corner of the crypto market lit up over a very different headline: Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, confirmed he is launching a memecoin called $LAPTOP on Coinbase's Base network on September 9. The name is a direct nod to the laptop controversy that dogged Biden throughout the 2020 election cycle.

According to reporting from the Wall Street Journal, the token will have a total supply of 1 billion units. The founding team, which includes Hunter Biden, will hold 30% of the supply, locked for six months and vested over two years. Another 20% is earmarked for airdrops — targeting wallets that lost money on the existing $TRUMP token, subscribers to Biden's Substack newsletter, and a mailing list run by video journalist Andrew Callaghan. A further 30% of the supply could be burned if certain milestones are met, including a Democratic presidential win in 2028.

The announcement triggered immediate copycat activity across the market. Within an hour of the news breaking, more than a dozen imitation "LAPTOP" tokens appeared across other blockchains, collectively trading nearly $7 million in volume, as speculators rushed to front-run the real launch. The episode underscores how quickly politically themed memecoins — following in the footsteps of $TRUMP — can generate market activity even before an official token goes live.

What It Means for the Market

Together, these two stories capture the dual nature of today's crypto landscape: a maturing, macro-sensitive Bitcoin market increasingly tied to Federal Reserve policy and Treasury yields, alongside a speculative, attention-driven memecoin sector where political figures and cultural moments can move markets in minutes. With CPI data and the Fed's rate decision both on the calendar this month, and $LAPTOP's launch just a day away, crypto traders have no shortage of catalysts to watch this week.
