Overview

About THORChain

THORChain (RUNE) is a decentralized liquidity network that lets people swap native assets across different blockchains without wrapping or trusting a custodian. RUNE is the settlement and bonding asset that sits at the center of the protocol, and the project is best understood as the plumbing that moves value between otherwise isolated chains rather than a consumer app you interact with directly.

What is THORChain?

THORChain was built to solve a stubborn problem in crypto: swapping between chains usually means trusting a bridge or holding an IOU version of a coin. THORChain instead settles swaps in native assets, so a user can trade real Bitcoin for real Ethereum. It currently connects around ten blockchains, and the assets routable through it include BTC, ETH, USDT, BNB, XRP, USDC, TRX, DOGE, BCH, LINK, LTC, DAI, AVAX, AAVE and ATOM.

How does THORChain work?

The network is a Layer 1 built with the Cosmos SDK and secured by a Tendermint-style proof-of-stake consensus run by a rotating set of nodes. Every pool is paired against RUNE, so a BTC-to-ETH trade is really two swaps under the hood: BTC into RUNE, then RUNE into ETH. Node operators must bond RUNE to participate, and liquidity providers deposit assets alongside RUNE to earn fees. This design ties the value secured to the value of the bonded and pooled RUNE, an economic model the team calls incentive pendulum balancing.

THORChain tokenomics and supply

RUNE has a fixed maximum supply of 354,175,863 tokens, with roughly 338 million already in circulation. That leaves relatively little left to be emitted, which reduces long-term inflation pressure. RUNE serves three jobs at once: it is the base pair for every liquidity pool, the bond nodes stake to secure the chain, and the asset used to pay network fees.

  • Settlement and pairing asset for all liquidity pools
  • Bonding collateral that secures the validator set
  • Fee and governance token across the ecosystem

What is THORChain used for?

Its main use case is native cross-chain swapping, which makes it popular with traders and wallets that want deep, chain-agnostic liquidity without bridging risk. Because it is also classed as infrastructure and a smart-contract-adjacent platform, other DeFi front-ends increasingly route orders through THORChain to source liquidity across Bitcoin, EVM and UTXO chains at once.

Where to buy THORChain

RUNE is listed on most major venues. To compare fees, liquidity and supported regions, start with our best crypto exchanges ranking. If you plan to hold RUNE longer term or provide liquidity, review our best crypto wallets guide to choose a self-custody option that supports the token safely.

Is THORChain a good investment?

RUNE is a high-beta infrastructure token whose demand is tied to swap volume and the health of its liquidity model. It has ranged from an all-time high near $20.87 to lows under a cent, which tells you how volatile it can be. Cross-chain protocols also carry real technical risk, and THORChain has weathered exploits in the past. Treat any position as speculative, size it carefully, and never invest more than you can afford to lose. This is not financial advice.

Frequently asked

What is RUNE used for on THORChain?

RUNE is the base asset paired with every liquidity pool, the bond nodes stake to secure the network, and the token used to pay fees and vote on protocol changes.

How many RUNE coins are there?

RUNE has a fixed maximum supply of 354,175,863 tokens, with roughly 338 million currently in circulation, leaving limited room for future emission.

Does THORChain use wrapped tokens?

No. THORChain's core value proposition is swapping native assets like real Bitcoin and Ethereum across chains without minting wrapped or IOU tokens.

Where can I buy THORChain?
