Optimism (OP) is an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling network and the governance token behind the Superchain — a growing family of chains built on the shared, open-source OP Stack. OP is used to vote on upgrades, direct funding and steer the Optimism Collective, the community that coordinates the ecosystem.

What is Optimism?

Optimism began as a single rollup, OP Mainnet, designed to give Ethereum users faster and cheaper transactions while inheriting Ethereum's security. It has since expanded into something larger: a network of interoperable chains. The OP Stack has become the leading framework for building Ethereum L2s, and prominent chains now run on it, including Base by Coinbase, Unichain by Uniswap, Ink by Kraken and World Chain by Worldcoin.

How does Optimism work?

Optimism is an optimistic rollup. It batches many transactions off-chain, executes them in a low-cost environment, and posts compressed data back to Ethereum, which acts as the settlement and data-availability layer. Transactions are assumed valid by default and can be challenged during a dispute window, which keeps costs low while leaning on Ethereum for final security. Every OP Chain in the Superchain shares standards and revenue: each contributes back the greater of 2.5% of total chain revenue or 15% of onchain profit to the Collective.

Optimism tokenomics and supply

OP has a total and maximum supply of 4,294,967,296 tokens — a deliberate nod to 2^32. Circulating supply is around 2.16 billion, so a meaningful portion remains allocated to the treasury, contributors and ongoing incentive programs. OP has ranged from an all-time low near $0.089 to an all-time high of $4.84. The token's value is closely tied to Superchain adoption and the revenue flywheel that funnels chain profits back into the ecosystem.
