About Ethereum Name Service
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed, open naming system on Ethereum that maps human-readable names like 'alice.eth' to machine-readable identifiers such as wallet addresses, content hashes and metadata. The ENS token is the governance asset that lets the community steer the protocol, turning a piece of core Web3 infrastructure into a community-owned public good.
What is Ethereum Name Service?
ENS solves a usability problem: crypto addresses are long strings of characters that are easy to mistype. ENS replaces them with readable names, so instead of sending funds to a 42-character hexadecimal address, you can send to 'alice.eth'. It also supports reverse resolution, associating names and metadata back to addresses. The goals resemble the internet's DNS, but the architecture is different because it is built on Ethereum's smart contracts and constraints.
How does Ethereum Name Service work?
ENS uses a system of dot-separated hierarchical names called domains. The owner of a domain has full control over its subdomains, so whoever owns 'alice.eth' can create and configure 'pay.alice.eth' as they wish. Top-level domains such as '.eth' are governed by smart contracts called registrars that set the rules for allocating subdomains. Anyone following those rules can register a name for their own use, and ENS can also import existing DNS names. It is deployed on Ethereum mainnet and several testnets, with libraries automatically detecting the relevant network.
Ethereum Name Service tokenomics and supply
ENS has a total and maximum supply of 100 million tokens. Roughly 40.9 million ENS are in circulation, with the remainder held for the DAO treasury, contributors and future distribution. ENS is best known for its 2021 airdrop to early users of the protocol, which distributed governance power to the people who had actually registered names. The token reached an all-time high near $83.40 and an all-time low around $3.97.
Token facts
- Maximum supply: 100,000,000 ENS
- Circulating supply: about 40.9 million ENS
- Role: governance token for the ENS DAO
- Categories: name service, decentralized identity, NFT, governance
What is ENS used for?
ENS names are increasingly used as portable Web3 identities: a single '.eth' name can represent your wallet across apps, receive multiple asset types and even point to decentralized websites. ENS names are themselves NFTs, so they can be bought, sold and transferred. The ENS token specifically is for governance, letting holders vote on protocol parameters, treasury use and the direction of the ENS DAO.
Where to buy Ethereum Name Service
ENS is broadly listed and available through the platforms in our best crypto exchanges ranking, which compares fees, liquidity and access. Because ENS is an Ethereum-native asset and names are NFTs, our best crypto wallets guide can help you pick a wallet that supports both the token and your registered domains.
Is ENS a good investment?
ENS combines a widely used piece of Ethereum infrastructure with a governance token, but the token's price and the naming service's utility are distinct things. Governance tokens can be volatile and their value does not automatically track protocol usage. This is not financial advice; consider ENS adoption trends, the DAO's treasury decisions and your own risk tolerance before investing.
