What is Ethereum Name Service?

ENS solves a usability problem: crypto addresses are long strings of characters that are easy to mistype. ENS replaces them with readable names, so instead of sending funds to a 42-character hexadecimal address, you can send to 'alice.eth'. It also supports reverse resolution, associating names and metadata back to addresses. How does Ethereum Name Service work?

ENS uses a system of dot-separated hierarchical names called domains. The owner of a domain has full control over its subdomains, so whoever owns 'alice.eth' can create and configure 'pay.alice.eth' as they wish. Top-level domains such as '.eth' are governed by smart contracts called registrars that set the rules for allocating subdomains. Anyone following those rules can register a name for their own use, and ENS can also import existing DNS names. It is deployed on Ethereum mainnet and several testnets, with libraries automatically detecting the relevant network.
