Overview

About DoubleZero

DoubleZero addresses a constraint most blockchain discussion ignores: validators communicate over the public internet, whose routing is optimised for general traffic rather than for consensus. It builds dedicated network capacity to reduce that latency and jitter.

Physical networking limits consensus speed

Consensus requires validators to exchange messages, and the time that takes bounds how fast blocks can be produced safely. Public internet routing introduces variable latency that no protocol optimisation removes. Beyond a point, the constraint is physics and infrastructure rather than software.

Purpose-built fibre routes between validator locations reduce both latency and its variability. That allows tighter consensus timing than a network designed for unpredictable paths — an infrastructure answer to a problem usually approached through protocol design.

This is not a permissionless network

Physical fibre is owned and operated by identifiable parties. A dedicated network for validators introduces infrastructure operators as participants in the system, which is a real centralisation consideration even where the blockchain above remains open.

The comparison is with traditional finance

Exchanges and trading firms have long invested heavily in dedicated connectivity and colocation because latency has measurable value. Blockchains reaching that level of performance sensitivity is a sign of maturity, and it imports the same infrastructure economics — including the advantage accruing to those who can pay for it.

What to weigh

A genuine constraint addressed with genuine infrastructure, where the trade is a physical layer with identifiable operators beneath a network that presents itself as decentralised.

Frequently asked

Why does physical networking limit blockchains?

Consensus requires message exchange between validators, and public internet routing introduces variable latency that protocol optimisation cannot remove.

What does dedicated fibre change?

Lower and more predictable latency between validators, allowing tighter consensus timing than a network built for unpredictable routing.

What is the centralisation consideration?

Physical infrastructure is owned by identifiable operators, introducing them as participants beneath a blockchain that presents as permissionless.
