About Compound
Compound (COMP) is the governance token of Compound Finance, one of the foundational lending and borrowing protocols in decentralized finance. COMP does not lend or borrow on its own; instead it gives holders control over how the protocol is run, from interest-rate models to which assets the platform supports. As one of the original DeFi governance tokens, it helped define the on-chain governance model many later projects copied.
What is Compound?
Compound Finance is a protocol that lets users supply crypto assets to earn interest or borrow against collateral, all governed by code and its community. The COMP token is the steering wheel for that system. It lets owners delegate voting rights to any address they choose, whether their own wallet, another user, an application, or a DeFi expert, so participation in governance does not even require holding the token yourself, only receiving a delegation.
How does Compound governance work?
COMP is an ERC-20 token, so it settles on Ethereum, and it also exists across other ecosystems including BNB Chain, Avalanche and Polygon. Its power lies in on-chain governance. Anyone with at least 1% of COMP delegated to their address can submit a governance proposal, and the community votes to accept or reject it. Proposals can be simple or complex sets of actions, such as:
- Adding support for a new collateral asset
- Changing an asset's collateral factor
- Adjusting a market's interest-rate model
- Modifying any other protocol parameter the administrator can control
Compound tokenomics and supply
COMP has a hard cap of 10 million tokens, with total supply fixed at that figure and roughly 9.67 million already in circulation, meaning most of the supply is live. This tight, capped supply gives each token meaningful governance weight. COMP's price history is dramatic, ranging from an all-time high around $854 to an all-time low near $15, a reminder that even blue-chip DeFi governance tokens are subject to severe drawdowns as market cycles and protocol usage shift.
What is Compound used for?
COMP's primary use is governance: proposing and voting on changes to the Compound protocol, and delegating that voting power. It sits within the broader DeFi lending and yield-farming categories, and because it spans multiple chains, it is widely integrated across the ecosystem. Owning COMP is effectively owning a stake in the direction of one of DeFi's most established money markets.
Where to buy Compound
COMP is one of the more widely listed DeFi tokens and trades on most major exchanges as well as decentralized venues. Compare fees, liquidity and security across platforms using our best crypto exchanges ranking. Since COMP is an ERC-20 token, you can self-custody it in any Ethereum-compatible option from our best crypto wallets guide, which is advisable if you intend to participate in or delegate governance.
Is Compound a good investment?
COMP's value is linked to the relevance and revenue of the Compound protocol, plus the premium the market places on governance rights. Risks include intensifying competition among lending protocols, smart-contract exposure, and the token's proven capacity for steep declines. Its established track record and capped supply are strengths, but DeFi governance tokens remain highly volatile and this is not financial advice. Evaluate the protocol's usage and treasury before deciding, and only invest what you can afford to lose.
