About Aerodrome Finance
Aerodrome Finance (AERO) is a next-generation automated market maker built to act as the central liquidity hub of Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2. It pairs a strong incentive engine with a vote-locked governance model, giving liquidity providers and voters a coordinated way to direct where rewards flow. Aerodrome inherits its design from Velodrome V2, the influential DEX pioneered on Optimism.
What is Aerodrome Finance?
Aerodrome is a decentralized exchange and AMM whose goal is to bootstrap and sustain deep liquidity across Base. Instead of leaving emissions to chance, it uses a vote-lock system so token holders decide which pools receive AERO incentives. That alignment between traders, liquidity providers and voters is what makes it a liquidity hub rather than just another swap venue.
How does Aerodrome work?
AERO is an ERC-20 token that lives on Base, so it settles with the security of Ethereum through an optimistic rollup rather than running its own consensus. Users lock AERO to receive veAERO, which grants voting power over weekly emission gauges. Voters earn trading fees and bribes from the pools they support, creating the ve(3,3) flywheel popularized by Velodrome. Liquidity providers deposit token pairs and earn AERO emissions in return.
Aerodrome tokenomics and supply
AERO uses an emissions-based model rather than a hard cap, so supply grows as new tokens reward liquidity, partly offset by locking. Circulating supply is roughly 963,837,657 AERO out of a total near 1,931,056,713 AERO.
- Circulating supply: about 963.8 million AERO
- Total supply: about 1.93 billion AERO, no fixed maximum
- All-time high $2.32; all-time low near $0.0000186
- Governance: lock AERO into veAERO to vote and earn fees
What is Aerodrome used for?
As Base's flagship DeFi venue, AERO underpins swapping, liquidity provision, yield farming and governance. Traders use it to route swaps at low cost, projects use its gauges to attract liquidity for their tokens, and holders use veAERO to steer incentives and collect protocol revenue. Its role in the Base ecosystem has also earned it a Binance Alpha spotlight.
Where to buy AERO
AERO trades on Aerodrome itself and on a growing list of centralized venues; our best crypto exchanges ranking shows which platforms offer the deepest AERO markets. For self-custody on Base, our best crypto wallets guide covers wallets that connect directly to Aerodrome's app. If you plan to lock for veAERO, a wallet you fully control is preferable.
Is Aerodrome a good investment?
AERO's value is tied closely to Base's growth and to trading activity on the exchange; more volume and locked supply can support the token, while quieter markets and heavy emissions can weigh on it. DEX tokens are volatile, exposed to smart-contract risk and to competition from other AMMs. The vote-lock model rewards active participants but demands attention. Do your own research and never risk more than you can afford to lose. This is not financial advice.
