Burner wallets: the case for a throwaway account
A burner wallet is a disposable account that holds almost nothing and does the risky interactions on your behalf. Used properly, it turns most wallet-drain incidents into a minor annoyance.

A burner wallet is a separate, deliberately disposable account you use for anything unproven: a mint, an airdrop claim, a new protocol, a link someone sent you. It holds only what that interaction needs. If the contract turns out to be malicious, the loss is capped at the burner's contents rather than your savings — and you retire the wallet rather than untangling it.
What is a burner wallet for?
Most self-custody losses are not broken cryptography. They are a permission granted to the wrong contract, or a signature given to a page that looked right. The defence that consistently works is not vigilance — vigilance fails eventually — but structure: making sure that the wallet doing the risky thing is not the wallet holding the money.
That is the entire idea. A mint goes wrong and you lose the mint budget. A claim page is a drainer and it drains a wallet containing enough gas for one transaction. The incident becomes an anecdote instead of a disaster.
How do you set one up?
- Create a new wallet with its own seed phrase. A second account inside the same wallet shares one seed — convenient, but not a separate failure domain.
- Back the seed up anyway, at least until the wallet is empty and retired. Burner does not mean careless.
- Fund it from an exchange withdrawal rather than from your main wallet where possible, so the two are not trivially linked on-chain.
- Send only what the task needs, plus gas. Top up again next time rather than leaving a float.
- Name it in your wallet interface so you never sign from the wrong account by accident.
When is a burner worth the friction?

What are the limits?
A burner contains damage; it does not prevent it, and it does not make a bad decision safe. Three limits are worth stating plainly.
- Privacy is not automatic. Funding a burner directly from your main wallet publishes the link between them forever.
- Assets you actually receive — a valuable NFT, a large airdrop — now live in the least protected wallet you own. Move them out promptly.
- Signature phishing can request permissions on assets held elsewhere in some designs, so read what you are signing even from a burner.
- Managing several wallets creates its own risk of confusion, which is precisely how people sign from the wrong account.
How do you retire one?
When a burner has done something you are unsure about, treat it as compromised. Move anything of value out, revoke outstanding approvals if it still holds tokens, and stop using the address. Do not import its seed into your main setup, and do not keep using it because it has a nice history. Creating a new one costs nothing, which is the whole point of the pattern. How do you fund a burner without linking it to everything else?
Funding a burner straight from your main wallet writes the relationship into the public record permanently. Anyone who later looks at either address can see the other, which defeats one of the quieter benefits of using a separate account: that a page you connect to learns nothing about your main holdings.
- Withdraw to the burner directly from an exchange account rather than transferring wallet to wallet.
- Use a separate withdrawal each time instead of a single large float you draw down.
- Do not consolidate leftover dust from several burners back into the main wallet.
- Remember that the connection is one-way in cost only: linking is permanent, unlinking is impossible.
Burner or hardware wallet — which for what?
They answer different questions. A hardware wallet protects the key from malware; a burner limits what a signed mistake can reach.
